Five most expensive NFTs ever sold:
1. CROSSROAD
CROSSROAD is an NFT designed by the famous digital artist Mike Winkelmann also known as Beeple. The NFT depicts an enlarged naked former US President Donald Trump to be lying around at the side of the road with anti-Trump profanities written all over his body depicting his 2020 election loss. The NFT was designed in such a way that it would have changed its design automatically to Donald Trump wearing a crown and walking through flames with glory if he had won the election.
The artwork was sold via Nifty Gateway for a whopping $6.66 million from Pablorfraile. The buyer remains anonymous.
This makes it the fifth most expensive NFT ever sold.
2. CryptoPunk #3100
CryptoPunks are a set of 10,000 randomly generated unique pixelated characters. They were designed by John Watkinson and Matt Hall from Larva Labs, an American game studious. The Cryptopunks were launched in June 2017 on the Ethereum blockchain. Initially, they were given out for free but as time passed some of the rare characters became highly collectable thus valuable.
The one, in particular, that we are going to talk about belongs to the rare Alien punk series that comprises a set of nine unique CryptoPunk characters. The CryptoPunk #3100 is from that rare unique Alien punk series. It depicts a pixelated character wearing a headband.
The above Cryptopunk was sold for 4,200 ETH amounting to a whopping $7.51 million in March 2021. Making it the fourth most expensive NFT ever sold.
3. CryptoPunk #7804
CryptoPunk #7804 also belongs to the rare Alien punk series. This artwork depicts a pixelated character donning a cap (forward-facing), a pair of shades and a smoking pipe. What makes it more rare and unique is that this is the only CryptoPunk character to have a cap (forward-facing) and a smoking pipe in the whole set.
This artwork was sold by Dylan Field, the CEO of Figma for a whopping 4,200 ETH in March 2021 amounting to $7.56 million at that time. Thus making this the third most expensive NFT ever sold.
4. CryptoPunk #7523
CryptoPunk #7523 is another NFT belonging to the Alien Punk series. This one depicts a pixelated character donning a medical mask. To most people, this CryptoPunk may seem accurate for depicting this current Covid-19 situation.
This CryptoPunk artwork was bought for a whopping $11.8 million by Shalom Meckenzie, who is DraftKings‘ largest shareholder via the Sothebys‘, an NFT auctioning platform. Thus giving it the number two spot on this list.
5. Everydays: The First 5000 Days
It’s time for the most awaited part of the article. The title of most expensive NFT ever sold in history goes to the Everydays: The First 5000 Days by the renowned digital artist Mike Winkelmann also know as Beeple. The NFT depicts a collage of 5,000 of Beeple‘s own previous artworks that signifies his growth as an artist throughout his career.
The artwork was sold on Christie’s, an NFT auctioning platform for a whopping $69.3 million. The buyer remained anonymous at first but later revealed himself to be Vignesh Sundaresan also known as Metakovan.
The second-highest bid was $60.2 million made by Justin Sun, the CEO of Tron.
