We are sure that most of you from the crypto sphere already know the name of El Salvador. Well, why wouldn’t you? After all, it was the first country to go against all odds to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender. Thus, becoming a prime example to the world on crypto adoption.

Well, this did not end here, the country’s President Nayib Bukele later further announced that the government is planning to harness the safe renewable geothermal energy from the many volcanoes present in the country to power the growing crypto mining industry in the country. Thus, solving the age-long issue of the crypto mining industry guzzling down on too much power. This was considered very harmful for the environment as most countries depended on traditional non-renewable sources of energy.

Further, back in November, President Nayib Bukele made another groundbreaking announcement of building a new futuristic city, named the Bitcoin city. The city would be built beside a volcano and in the same way as the crypto mining industry this city too would be entirely powered by safe renewable geothermal energy harnessed from the volcano. Thus, in both cases, it would be totally eco-friendly and carbon-free.

Sounds great right? But, what if we told you that experts beg to differ from the above.

What’s wrong with the plan?

Experts believe that the government isn’t quite thinking the whole thing through as there are big issues with this plan of theirs. First of all, setting up geothermal plants aren’t a joke. It takes a lot of work and it takes 2-3 years to fully set up one. Secondly, geothermal plants need a steady supply of groundwater to cool the heat into steam and here the major issue is that the country’s groundwater reserves are already steadily decreasing. Thirdly, it is very costly to set up and run a geothermal plant compared to traditional power plants that mainly run on oil and coal. These are also some of the major factors why most countries aren’t willing or aren’t able to use safe renewable geothermal energy despite fully knowing the harmful effects of depending on the traditional ones on the environment.
